New DNR Lake Coordinator….Welcome Alex Smith

Greetings Everyone! We are fortunate to have another DNR Lake Coordinator working with us in Northern Wisconsin. Alex Smith joined our team in May, and will contribute strong technical and people skills as well as conservation passion to the job. He will cover Polk, Barron, Rusk, and Sawyer Counties. If you’ve been working with me or Jim Kreitlow on a current grant/open project, that will continue, but Alex will be taking over the reigns for new projects and as the point of contact for those four counties. With this positive change, I’ll now cover Ashland County, and Jim will cover Forest, Florence, Langlade, Lincoln, Price, and Taylor Counties

.

Alex’s contact info: alex.smith@wisconsin.gov and 715-635-4124.

Please welcome Alex aboard and share this good news with your networks.

Best regards,
PPamela J. Toshner

Please join me in welcoming Alex Smith, as the new DNR lakes coordinator / biologist covering Polk, Barron, Rusk, and Sawyer Counties. Alex started on May 21 and is stationed at the Spooner Service Center. Alex has been with the DNR on an LTE basis since 2007 working with lakes associations, grants, aquatic invasive species, monitoring lakes, and evaluating critical habitat. Alex’s experience includes spearheading critical habitat designations through positive professional relationships with DNR staff, lake organizations, and the public. He has been recognized by many in the lakes community as an exceptional public servant. In 2011 Alex received the DNR water resources employee of the year award for regional staff. Alex has a Bachelor of Science degree from UW-Stevens Point with a major in watershed hydrology and management. Alex lives on a small lake near Spooner with his wife Amber, young son Adrian, and two dogs Joey and Gus. In his free time, Alex enjoys boating, fishing, hunting, gardening, and traveling.
